Thierry Goldberg Gallery

Lenz Geerk , Jordan Kasey, Anthony Miler

June 4 - July 1, 2016

Thierry Goldberg Gallery is pleased to present CLOSER, a group exhibition of paintings by Lenz Geerk, Jordan Kasey and Anthony Miler. The exhibition opens on June 4 with a reception from 6 to 8pm, and will continue through July 1, 2016. Taking it's title from Lenz Geerk’s series of small canvases by the same name, CLOSER explores three different takes on figuration.

Geerk’s muted paintings depict anonymous figures in action, usually seen from an unusual angle. In one of the paintings, a male character is playing tennis, his face hidden behind the ball in midair as he lifts the racket to hit it. In another painting, a female figure is seen from above, seated in an impossible position and looking down to tie her shoe while holding a phone. Her face, like in most of Geerk’s paintings, is hidden as well.

Jordan Kasey often positions her figures in a close-up perspective, scaling up their presence both in appearance and in form. In Woman with Plants a female figure is laying on the grass, her eyes squinted and her skin a glowing shade of red. In Bus Ride, an unidentified man with his back to the viewer is riding the bus while looking out the window.

Anthony Miler’s works incorporate aggressive graphite scribbles on raw canvas, featuring distorted characters in a nonrepresentational style of figure painting. His impromptu figures nod to Dubuffet, Karel Appel and CoBrA, the post-war Scandinavian gestural art movement.
