Dallas Art Fair 2022: Carlo D’Anselmi, Bony Ramirez, and Kenechukwu Victor

April 21 - 24, 2022

For Dallas Art Fair 2022, Thierry Goldberg Gallery is pleased to present a new selection of works by Carlo D’Anselmi, Bony Ramirez, and Kenechukwu Victor.

Carlo D’Anselmi composes enchanting environments that often bring into question domesticity in relation to the natural world. Utilizing vibrant swaths of rich hues, D’Anselmi theatrically illuminates his subjects generating their illusory surroundings. His figures appear in a dreamlike state completely absorbed in their thoughts or actions. Reflective surfaces and hand-drawn imagery adorn his figures granting the viewer a glimpse into their private realities. Plants and animals move freely throughout his compositions, often encircling his figures and lending to moments that simmer with tension. D’Anslemi revels in these moments of uncertainty, deliberately blurring the lines between harmony and dissonance, performance and reality, compelling one to contemplate the principle of nurture versus nature.

Bony Ramirez oscillates between Caribbean and Rennnisance iconography generating striking portraits that are steeped in heritage. Combining the practices of painting, drawing, and sculpture, Ramirez works in a multitude of layers. Relishing in the exaggeration of the human form, Ramirez's subjects are characterized by their distorted body parts, rainbow swirled ears and wide doll-like eyes. His sinuous subjects are primarily drawn on paper and bonded to vibrant-hued wood panels along with other compositional elements. The compositions, as a whole, tend to reflect traditional portraiture drawing upon a mixture of architectural elements to frame his subject and construct their identity.

Drawing influence from friends, family, and his surrounding community, Kenechukwu Victor exposes personal perspectives on Nigerian life through portraiture. Victor approaches painting as an act of storytelling, frequently employing the canvas as a pulpit for his figure's narratives. Committed to portraying an honest account, Victor sets his figures’ lips and hair ablaze of alabaster white. This act serves as an homage to the Nzu tradition symbolizing truth, purity, and peace. Victor places his figures within their own intimate environments often encouraging an exchange with the viewer. Each subject's gaze confronts the viewer directly, revealing their experiences and providing a sense of agency over their own narratives.
