Margot Ferrick
Scratching

July 31 - August 28, 2020

Thierry Goldberg is pleased to present Scratching, an online solo exhibition of works by Margot Ferrick. The exhibition will be on view from July 31 until August 28, 2020.

Unafraid to take a closer look at oneself, or to listen a half beat longer to that interior voice asking an unanswerable but unavoidable question, the work of Margot Ferrick does not shy from introspection, nor from a public display of emotional accountability.

The artist turns their characters, both text and figure, into avatars of sentiment. Intimate perspectives are immediately arresting and specific enough to feel safe for processing at a distance, though not without sparking a separately recalled private twinge. Simultaneously direct yet open to interpretation, the work is open and available, understanding that you will take what you need, even if that’s everything there is to give.

Ferrick’s works have drawn rave reviews for the way in which they upend traditional conventions of formal storytelling. Pieces in this exhibition are excerpted from various projects, including a canine caretaker’s responses to an ailing child, figures for an analog animation for accompanying a poem, and skepticism surrounding the seeming bliss of the life of a domesticated animal, among others. Even in their suspended states, the works here resonate with Ferrick’s unique style and rhythms.

Margot Ferrick (b. 1988, Long Island, NY) currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. They hold a BA in studio art from Stony Brook University, NY. A multi-time Ignatz Award nominee, their work has appeared in numerous anthologies and in gallery exhibitions such as Good Press Gallery, Glasgow, Scotland; The Millionaires Club, Leipzig, Germany;  and Riverviews Artspace, Lynchburg, VA.
