Thierry Goldberg Gallery is pleased to present Red Bridge, an online exhibition of works by Luke Osborn. The exhibition will be on view from July 24th to August 16th, 2024.
Red Bridge brings together unexpected motifs of crowds, screws, pianos, and underwear in a striking collection of subjects that have peeked Luke Osborn’s curiosity. Each of his paintings revel in magnetic colors, opposing textures and energetic compositions that excite and engage. Combining water color, oil paint, and collage, Osborn deftly explores material and subject while creating captivating paintings that invite contemplation.
Crown, 2024, displays Osborn’s unique exploration of using both watercolor and oil paint on canvas through a technique of laying paper pulp mixed with gesso. The work portrays a crowd in varying shades of red, blue, and black: tactile oil paints highlight distinct facial features, hairstyles, and clothing patterns of individuals in the foreground. As the crowd recedes into space, Osborn deftly uses watercolor to blur subjects into an anonymous throng. Finally, the sky is painted, once again, in tactile, chunky oil paint. This harmonious interplay of mediums stands as a testament to Osborn's artistic ingenuity.
The charming simplicity of Screw Box, 2024 allows viewers to savor delicate details of light and form as they interact with each other. The work, which depicts a precisely ordered red box of screws, renders the reflections of light and shadow on each gleaming head and spiraled body with mesmerizing energy. Osborn’s inventive use of a mundane object challenges viewers to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. The work captures attention with majestic colors but stimulates a deeper reflection on the small, often overlooked distinctions of supposedly identical forms.
Osborn’s paintings ultimately reconcile and balance supposed opposites: water color and oil paint, the identical and the unique, stillness and dynamism. With each reconciled contradiction, these paintings communicate a story of individuality found through connection and interaction with a sense of surprising and delightful honesty.
Luke Osborn (b. 2002, Sausalito, CA) lives and works in Providence, RI. He is currently pursuing a BFA in painting with a concentration in drawing at the Rhode Island School of Design. This is his first show with Thierry Goldberg.
